Does this have an air of familiarity? We have well logs and photos for this location but I’m not sure how to “find” all of them. They’re on several shared drives and I think there are still unscanned maps stored on-site. I believe that’s all stored in the GIS portion of the software, but I don’t have access to it.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your frame of reference) you’re not alone. Let’s face it – oil and gas is a data-intensive business and for a long time all that data was stored/logged as paper. Even if you’ve begun the task of digitizing it, the management of it may still find you with a less-than-ideal solution (especially if you have a crisis and need to find information FAST).
You would most likely benefit from a business partner who has experience accurately associating Word documents, Excel files, TIFFs, PDFs, etc. to the corresponding API # or well name. And if you cannot ascertain the API# and only have a well name, it’s important to know where to turn to locate that unique API# so that all corresponding data is accurately mapped/routed. Working together, a knowledgeable data management ally can complement what your interpreters “know” from hands-on-experience. Since most oil & gas executives are operators by trade and not data management experts, we can each focus on our strengths.
Whether it’s structured data (SCADA information, depth readings, production data), unstructured (CAD drawings, well logs, incident reports) or semi-structured (processed data as a product of modeling exercises), it’s unusable if you can’t locate it. If your primary goal is to reduce the amount of time your geologists spend looking for data and increase their productivity, streamlining your data storage is a surefire way to work toward that end. Maybe geophysical data is in one database, core sample data resides in a separate location, and well logs in yet a third, you’re staff is not working as efficiently as it could be. Worse yet, perhaps you have duplicate information in different collections (out in the field and back at corporate) and you’re sorting through multiple versions. How much more productive could you be if all of your assets were easily located, de-duplicated and merged, and could be shared and reviewed by multiple people simultaneously?
