The opening of the Health Insurance Marketplace has news and social media outlets of all sorts buzzing. Frustration and confusion abound as users try to work around crashing websites, missing information, puzzling forms and delayed start dates. But the move from manual paper enrollment to online enrollment has at least one insurance marketplace anticipating success.
In a radio spot for Minnesota Public Radio by Elizabeth Stawicki, Minnesota Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson believes that their paper-free, online marketplace, called MNsure, will encourage more individuals to sign up for insurance.
“We make it difficult currently for people to sign up and enroll because of all of the paperwork. MNsure is really going to change that for people on public programs. I think it’s one of the main ways that we’re going to get health insurance to more people in our state,” said Jesson.

Going paperless in the health insurance marketplaces is obviously a step in the right direction as it increases ease for customers, but it won’t help just this sector connect with its customers; it can also help your company strengthen connections with its customers.
Paper is many things, like white and thin, but it is not a customer-pleaser because of its time-wasting nature. But why is paper such a time-waster?
- It increases the time it takes to find a file or claim
- It increases the time it takes to fix mistakes in those files or claims
- It increase the time it takes for employees to process claims
Eliminating paper, then, has the potential to allow employees to crank out claims quicker and as a result deliver those claims more quickly to customers. So what can replace the paper?
An Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system could do the job as it allows companies to virtually store, manage, capture and deliver content. It organizes a company’s documents and makes them easily accessible from inside the office or out, decreasing the time spent on locating, fixing and processing claims and increasing the speed with which claims are given to customers.
ECM systems have many different components that generate this increase in speed such as workflow, Intelligent Capture and Document Management.
