OnBase, look how much you’ve grown!
We’ve all heard some variation of this phrase in our lives. We inwardly cringe and just smile and nod while they pat our heads or hold our hands. Have you ever thought of software in this way?
I have had the privilege to watch the OnBase solution grow since 2002. Hyland Software listens to their customer base and implements products and solutions where it makes sense. I truly believe that is why OnBase has evolved from simply an ECM system into a platform. Every release of every product has new functionality, improved performance and ease of use.
Back in the olden days, we only used the thick client. If we upgraded, we had to reinstall the client on all 400+ machines! I had to check for 20 document types in workflow to do one action and mentally prepare myself to write 20 rules and 20 actions and my, was that messy and unreadable.
Over the years, Hyland has made their software easier to use and administer. After an upgrade, we no longer have to get our IT department to push the new client to the building. The Unity Client is deployed through a click once URL. Document Imaging has seen improvements with image processing and OCR.
The move towards service-based technologies has improved both our development and user experience:
- Users no longer have to have OnBase open to leverage the API
- The Unity API has made the task of programming interaction with OnBase much simpler and more intuitive
- Mailbox Importer can now automatically import emails without having Outlook open
- Workflow Timer Service can run all of your timers without a UI, and it is threaded so they are no longer waiting on each other
Workflow, which I thought was pretty awesome to begin with, has even seen improvements. When we first started using OnBase, we had to store different information in keywords to keep up with different information and results. With the introduction of properties, storing useless information in keywords is a thing of the past. While insignificant to some, the ability to add multiple document types to a single rule is HUGE! This ability improves the readability of workflow configuration immensely.
I look forward to watching OnBase continue to grow. With every release, I find they have capitalized on many opportunities to improve the software itself, as well as keep up with the technology side of things. My job of developing solutions is definitely better because of OnBase!
